The day almost passed without a mention of Dr. Seuss' birthday, shame on me! My alma mater always celebrates his birthday in a big way:
Geisel (Dr. Seuss' real last name) Library |
Here are my favorite Seuss facts:
- He created Seuss to sound like soice, rhyming with voice. Why didn't he correct the way we pronounce it today? As a children's author, he thought the way it rhymed with goose (as in Mother Goose) could only help.
- He started using the pen name after throwing a boozy party during college, during prohibition, so he could keep writing for Dartmouth's literary humor magazine.
- He was kind of afraid of kids! According to his wife, he would always wonder: "What might they do next? What might they ask next?" She added: "He couldn't just sit down on the floor and play with them."
- He was inspired to write Cat in the Hat because he thought the Dick and Jane books were boring. He won $50 from his publisher for successfully using only 50 different words in the book.
- My favorite Dr. Seuss book is the Lorax. I am NOT excited that this is being turned into a 3D, CGI film featuring the voices of Danny DeVito and Zac Efron. Not. excited.
